Tagging and Mentioning Other Users in Your Posts
Tagging and mentioning are how you bring other people into your posts on Whistlr, whether you're crediting a friend who appears in a photo, giving a shoutout in a caption, or looping someone into a comment thread. Knowing the difference between the two, and how to manage who can tag you, helps you use the feature thoughtfully and keeps your own profile free of tags you didn't ask for.
Mentioning Someone in a Caption or Comment
Type the @ symbol followed by a username anywhere in a caption or comment to mention that person. Whistlr will show a list of matching accounts as you type, including people you follow and accounts in your In Circle, so you can tap the right one instead of typing the full username. Once posted, the mention appears as a tappable link that opens that person's profile.
Tagging someone in a photo or video is a different action from mentioning them in text. After selecting your media in the post composer, tap the image itself and then tap Tag People to place a tag directly on the part of the photo or video where that person appears. Tagged people show up when a viewer taps the post, and the post itself can also appear in a separate "Tagged" section of the tagged person's profile if they allow it.
Notifications for Mentions and Tags
When you mention someone in a caption or comment, they receive a notification letting them know they were mentioned, along with a preview of the post or comment. Tagging someone in a photo or video sends a similar notification specifically noting that they were tagged in a post, with a direct link to view it. Both types of notifications respect each person's notification settings, so they can choose how and whether they're alerted.
Mentions are best for giving credit, starting a conversation, or pointing a caption at someone without implying they're physically shown in the content. Photo and video tags are best reserved for actually identifying who appears in the media itself, since that's how they're displayed to anyone viewing the post.
Being tagged in someone else's post should never feel like losing control of your own profile — it should feel like being included, on terms you set.
Controlling Who Can Tag You
Go to Settings > Privacy > Tags to choose who is allowed to tag or mention you. You can set this to Everyone, In Circle Only, or No One. There's also a separate toggle for Manual Tag Approval, which holds new tags in a pending state until you approve them, so nothing appears as a confirmed tag on your profile without your review.
If someone tags you in a way you'd rather not be associated with, you don't have to leave it up. Open the post, tap the tag or your name within it, and select Remove Me from Tag. This removes the tag and the post from your tagged section without affecting the post itself for the original poster, and they aren't shown the specific reason the tag was removed.
- @Mention: Type @ plus a username in a caption or comment to link directly to that person's profile
- Photo/Video Tag: Tap the media in the composer, then Tag People, to mark who appears in it
- Tag Permissions: Settings > Privacy > Tags lets you choose Everyone, In Circle Only, or No One
- Manual Approval: Turn on tag approval so new tags wait for your review before appearing on your profile
- Removing a Tag: Tap the tag on the post and select Remove Me from Tag to detach it from your profile
These same controls apply across Whistlr's content types, so whether someone tries to tag you in a Chattr post, a Minis video, or an Imprint, your tag settings are checked consistently before the tag is allowed to go through.
